A True Gentle Giant
Among my beloved Maine Coons, there is one who stands out not just for his impressive size but for his kind and endearing nature—Phoenix Borealis. He is the biggest and heaviest of all my Maine Coons, yet his heart is as soft as his luxurious fur. A true gentle giant, Phoenix is welcoming and friendly, always showing kindness when a new feline joins the family. Despite his towering presence, he is timid, often startled by the smallest noises, sometimes even his own shadow. If something drops on the floor, he is the first to bolt in the opposite direction.
Phoenix is the twin brother of Sapphire and the half-brother of Pickle, and his grand size may have been inherited from their father, a 10 kg Maine Coon with East European genes. Despite his stature, he respects my older domestic cats, and they, in turn, choose to avoid any confrontation with him—not out of fear, but likely because of his sheer size.
He enjoys playing with everyone, but his favorite playmate is Pickle, who can handle his rough-and-tumble style. Often, I hear his signature trilling as he calls out to invite his siblings to join in the fun. Among all my Maine Coons, Phoenix is the most vocal, responding when I speak to him, as if we are having our own little conversations.
One of his cutest habits happens in the bathroom. He loves rolling on the floor, exposing his fluffy belly for rubs—a rare privilege in the feline world. However, when it comes to kisses on his face, he tries to evade them. Of course, I always win that battle, reminding him, "I is the mammy, I is allowed."
There is nothing about Phoenix that isn't lovable. In many ways, he reminds me of my first Maine Coon, Nev, who, despite being only 7 kg, shared so many similarities with him. I miss Nev dearly, but Phoenix brings me immense joy, almost as if Nev had risen from the ashes. This connection is one of the reasons behind his name. One day, while praying to God about what to call him, I kept encountering the name "Phoenix" everywhere I went. I took this as a divine sign and knew it was meant to be. Though the phoenix is a creature of Egyptian mythology, the meaning of rebirth and resilience resonates deeply with me.
I am incredibly proud to have Phoenix Borealis in my life. He is a magnificent, affectionate, and playful companion, and I am beyond grateful that he is part of my world.
